Our Values
The Call to Action Slate is united around a commitment to a democratic, member-led UAWD, able to build rank-and-file power, transform our locals, and forge a broader class-struggle union.
We believe that UAWD must be a compass, not a weathervane, for the UAW - guiding our union with competent and clear leadership, not simply responding to it. We are grounded in these three values:
Independence: Only an independent rank-and-file movement can stay true to the working class and avoid being co-opted by the bosses. We should work with leaders we elect, not just follow them, and hold them accountable when necessary. People are fallible, which is why we must be bound to principles and ideals, not individuals.
Democracy: Democracy doesn’t just knit people together to generate better ideas, it also builds buy-in around a collective strategy. A small group of leaders can tend towards self-serving control, but democracy builds power in numbers.
Class Struggle: We believe UAWD’s mission must be to build a militant, class struggle union: one engaged in ongoing struggle against the ruling class, through bottom-up organizing on the shop floor, to win the collective liberation of the entire working class.
With bosses and bought-off union bureaucrats arrayed against us, who will always point to false enemies so we don’t fight the corporations, our class struggle vision is only possible through building an independent, democratic UAWD.
